The Bachelor Winter game doesn’t last forever, so much like the real Olympics. But unlike the real Olympics, the stars gather for a World Tells All special. As the world waited to see what decision Arie Luyendyk Jr. will take — except they follow The Bachelor Spoilers and don’t have to guess — members of the Bachelor Nation got to see an entirely different engagement on live TV.
Clare Crawley’s love triangle appeared to be a bust, but surprisingly ended with a live proposal. Watch it happen below!
Before we get to the video of the delightful and heartrending proposal, let’s recollect Clare Crawley’s journey.
She’s been … luckless in love on the Bachelor show, people. It happens.
On The Bachelor Winter Games, Clare had initially seemed to be in a safe place — kind of — because she was in the middle of a love triangle between Benoit Beausejour-Savard and Christian Rauch.
Benoit is Canadian, whereas Christian is from Germany. Initially, Clare and Benoit seemed like a pair of pea in a pod but Clare ended up parting ways with the Canadian Native because she wanted to get to know Christian better. However, Christian and Clare called it quits before the kissing contest, when they were all off the show, Benoit did not know the details- he had no idea Crawley and Christian had split. He however did reach out to her with a simple text, inquiring how she was doing.
“At that point, I was just thinking, ‘She’s ending up with Christian,'” Benoit concedes in an interview with People.
“The sentence that kept running through my mind was, ‘It’s not the end of the two of us.’ But I knew at that moment that she may have fallen for him.”
On the show, she had made it known to Benoit she didn’t feel as intensely about him as he was about her. Evidently, all that changed. And that simple text asking how she was doing budded into so much more.
“It didn’t happen, so she just called me and from there, it went better and better, and we spent hours and hours each and every day talking to each other.”
Crawley cooed about the unexpected proposal itself and her new engagement.
“It’s overwhelming, it’s crazy.” It is a bit insane — especially if it was a sincere surprise.
“Going on these Bachelor shows is a huge risk and you don’t know the outcome. It’s scary, but it’s a risk that you have to take to get the good in the end.”
Though the proposal was a surprise to Crawley, Benoit says that falling in love with her was a surprise for him.
“I didn’t expect this,” he confesses. His frame of mind going into the show didn’t really get him set for the love that he found.
“I was heartbroken on The Bachelorette: Canada but going back on this show I had an open mind. I was realistic that there might not be someone for me.” Certainly a lot truer than you’d hear reality stars admit.
“But like you’ve seen on TV, I had the biggest crush ever on her. [But then] it wasn’t a crush, it was developing into something really deep and strong.” Benoit had a custom last-minute Neil Lane ring made for Crawley.
That sounds a lot like they had at least brushed the idea of engagement, because he knew the exact kind of ring she wanted. Truly, though these two might still have some bends to work out (remember, this was all very last minute), it sounds really smart if their relationship was left to grow off camera.
It’s so much harder to be honest when millions of eyes are watching, guys.
